5 Shows You Must See On The Discovery Channel

By Sheila Dollarsby

Most people know that when you are looking for factual and informative information about just about any topic, the first place you turn is to the Discovery Channel. Sure, there have been a few low budget knock offs but one thing remains true, and that is that no other network consistently offers the depth of content. The good news is that as long as they remain the leader, others will continue to follow.

The Colony is a great example of the interesting programming you'll see. The Colony's plot focuses on 10 lone survivors from a vicious virus outbreak. These men and women who all come from completely different ethnic groups must ban together to live and thrive in a rundown warehouse while conserving the basic food and water supplies they were able to find.

If you ever recall watching the show MacGyver and enjoyed it, you are going to flip when you see this show. The colonists have to face the same real challenges you'd expect if this event had actually happened. Interpersonal issues exist as well as safety and security issues as they try to defend their compound against enemy invaders on a quest to loot their food and water rations. You'll experience fear, anger, and the thrill of victory as you watch these brave souls work together to survive the ultimate tragedy.

If you are someone who can't get enough of unscripted reality television, then you will love Storm Chasers. With what begin in 2007 as a unique look deep inside some of the deadliest storms on earth, has now turned into a cult phenomenon. Watch as these brave but sometimes foolish scientists head directly into the eye of hurricanes or drive right into the path of a raging tornado. There is no room for the weak willed on this journey. You'll travel with them in their armored vehicles as they tempt fate and death at every turn.

When it comes to shows that give a unique perspective on the works of Leonardo DaVinci, then Doing DaVinci has got to be at the top of the list. In this show, expert builders try to recreate some of his proposed inventions, that while were intricate in detail, many never made it off the drawing board. They use only materials available in DaVinci's time, and try to stick with many of the original tools used back then. So far, they have built a working full-scale model of a Siege Ladder, A Scythe Chariot, and even a human powered armored tank. This season expects to be even more difficult.

One of the more unique shows on the Discovery Channel that is a must see, even if it may make some a little squeamish is Verminators, (be sure you say that with an Austrian accent.) Mike Masterson and his best friend Kevin Alden own ISOTECH Pest Management Inc. one of the most high tech control services in the United States. They tackle a wide range of household vermin. They have captured or killed everything from bee infestations, swarms of rats, bats and scorpions, as well as wild vermin like raccoons, skunks, and opossums.

For those of you who are fans of Planet Earth, get ready to dig your teeth into another Discovery Channel masterpiece, Nature's Most Amazing Events. If you are ready to witness the most amazing natural and animal events that you've never seen then hold on to your hats. Never before will you be so close to the action. Watch as Humpback Whales migrate through the islands of Hawaii. Then sit stunned as you see the great salmon run or the overflowing of the Okavango Delta in Africa. - 29943
