This year when college bowl season kicks off, the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas will once again take the field at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kicking off on December 22, the game seats 40,000 fans enjoying the unique atmosphere of a college football bowl. The Maaco Bowl Las Vegas, formerly known as the Las Vegas Bowl, usually picks a team from the Mountain West Conference and a team from the Pac-10. The MWC team is usually the conference champion unless that team qualifies for the BCS.

Formerly known as the Las Vegas Bowl, the game originated from the California Raisin Bowl, which was played from 1981-1991 in Fresno, CA. After moving to Las Vegas in 1992, the bowl has featured several different conference matchups, but is also known for the 1995 game which featured Toledo and Nevada, where Toledo's 40-37 win in overtime was the first overtime game in college football. Overtime for regular season games was adopted by the NCAA the following year.

The team with the most appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl is BYU, with four games, followed by Nevada and UCLA, who have both appeared in three bowl games each. No team has more than two Las Vegas Bowl victories. With this game likely featuring a strong Pac-10 teams against the conference champion from MWC, this game always looks to be great college football in the setting of Las Vegas, with festivities beginning as early as October.

The Maaco Bowl Las Vegas festivities have already started, with the VIP Community Kick Off Luncheon on October 1 and the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas VIP Outing on October 22. But things really kick into gear once the teams are set, beginning with the Team Welcome ... Media Conference on December 10th at the ESPN Zone. Fans can enjoy the Terry Fator Show Night on December 19th at the Mirage and then return to the ESPN Zone for the Welcome Reception.

On Sunday, December 12, Kids Day will be held for all of the visiting fans and their families, along with the luncheon and then a visit by both teams to the Sunrise Children's Hospital. Fans will then gather on December 21st at the world famous Fremont Street Experience to enjoy a pep rally, and on same day there will be a Kickoff Luncheon at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which will also host a Cheer Clinic. The Kickoff Media conference will also be held at the conference center. Then as a culmination of the pregame festivities, the Bud Light Pre Game Tailgate Party will kick off at the stadium.

The college football system is controversial among sports fans. Some fans love it while others would like to see it replaced with a more traditional playoff system. While it does have it's detractors, there is no doubt that the college bowl games are a great atmosphere and one that all college football fans should experience. It's even better when your team has a chance to finish the season with a win, and the events surrounding the game are something worth visiting by themselves. Then, to top it all off, you're in Vegas! Do we really need an excuse to head to Las Vegas?
